American Gangster premiered Friday night, and everyone (including myself) ran to the theaters to see it. While waiting outside the theater, I watched as everyone talked and waited with anticipation for the movie.
I’d been waiting for this moment for months, and finally it was here. Nothing was going to stop me from seeing it, and better yet, getting a good seat, popcorn, and my lemonade was a must. As everyone piled into the 300+ row theater, I was filled with excitement. This wasn’t just a “movie” to me; it was a “history lesson”. Being from The Bronx, NY, and knowing somewhat about “Frank Lucas's Empire”, and also seeing first-hand what the drug game (good & bad) is all about, I wanted to learn more. The main focus of the movie was about Frank Lucas’s “Drug Operation”. Even though the drugs were a major factor, I wanted to learn more about the man behind the mask. I wanted the producers to go more in depth with the person he was, and grew to be. In the movie I found myself wanting him to over-come, to maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, to achieve greatness. Then I thought to myself, "How could you want such things for a man, who was the ring-leader, in the destruction of millions of lives within the Tri-State area?" But sometimes movies do that to you. They make the bad guy’s look like kings who are smart, witty, warm hearted, and yet cold blooded. Some would call him a noble man amongst chaos, but we call him the "American Gangster". Even though I didn’t get the image of Frank Lucas, I really wanted. I was still very happy with the one I received. This movie was a great reflection of the way drugs and crime have/has affected our society then and still today. So with that said, I recommend that you all take time out of your busy day, and see this movie. In my own way I found it empowering and I know you will also.
